How I learned to enjoy music from a different point of view

A funny thing happened after I started roleplaying my game characters more deeply.

My music tastes started to change.

I was trying to view everything from the point of my characters, and this included music. I was trying hard to look at everything from the point of view of someone different from me.

I went a little crazy, tearing into music with glee, now that I could see it from the point of view of other people. I noticed that I was able to appreciate music now that I wouldn’t have liked before.

I have an increased ability to enjoy things now. I had ideas on what was “proper” music before, in terms of how much cursing there should be, sexual material, etc.

I am moving back towards a more curated mode now, and thinking hard about what I want the music I listen to to ultimately be. Positive? Do I want to encourage negative feelings? Initially indulge in catharsis, and then move up to something more positive?

But doing this expanded my ideas and loosened my mind. I’m more flexible now. And this is a gift. It helps me be able to have more in common with other people. I can consider other musical points of view now, while still ultimately deciding on what I like the best.
